The Morrigan

Description

In Celtic mythology, the Morrigan was a being from the Otherworld that would appear in different forms to torment people from the real world. She would appear as a woman, a heifer, eel, wolf, and also a crow; and as a crow she would fly about men's camps on the eve of battle crying out horror stories of their doom! I wanted to display the grand detail in the crow's anatomy, as since I first heard about the Morrigan, I became greatly interested in the birds. So I wanted to show that when I come across crows, whether they be living or dead, I still see them as a myth that still surrounds us.

A very nice piece. You have really capture the slack of the body in death and every feather is so detailed. It looks almost like a photograph in the memory. You remember nothing clearly about that day, it was yet another day where you do what you do, nothing out of the ordinary except this bird. The crow on the path. You don't why it sticks in your mind but it does, the crow that won't fly again. This is a very well studied picture.
I've heard of Morrigan. I think when she was a crow she had a knot of rope around her neck which was tide so tight the neck bled down the rope. The other story I read was from Irish mythology, I think. It's said she came to Earth and married a mortal man but because the king of the tribe insulted an humilliated her while she was with child she cursed then before she died. But I could be wrong as it's a while since I've read it.
